CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
"Well, its 10:20 and still no sign of those two," Tom said, glancing at his wristwatch. He pulled the walkie-talkie from his belt and pushed the button. "Hey, Tabs, you there? Over."
A moment passed before the walkie-talkie squawked and Tabs replied, "Yes, still here, bored as hell. Anything yet? Over."
"Not a peep. Can you try again? Over."
Tom clipped the walkie-talkie back in place and focused on Sam. She was sitting on the picnic tabletop, her long legs swinging back and forth like she was running a marathon. He stepped closer to her. She kept staring at the ground, either ignoring him or unaware he was getting closer.
"Now don't get down," Tom said, stopping to stand in front of her. She glanced up and offered a weak smile. "That's the spirit."
Sam laughed and swept her ponytail over her shoulder. Her hands gripped her knees tightly, and Tom fought the urge to reach over and take one of them. They'd been waiting for fifteen minutes, and Sam grew more agitated as each one passed.
"I'm sure they'll be here any minute," Bob offered.
Tom noted he found a bench that let him study Sam without being obvious. If Sam wasn't so distraught, she might notice Bob's stares, but right now he was getting an eyeful without repercussions. Tom wondered if he should say something but decided against it. He didn't want to come off as jealous or give Bob the idea he was a rival. Best to let it lie ... until it becomes a real problem.
"Yeah," Sam said, returning her gaze to the ground. Her head popped up when Tom's walkie-talkie squawked with static.
"Hey, Tom, you there? Over." Tabs asked over the airwaves. He snatched it off his belt and responded.
"Yes, ma'am, over."
"Lizzy just called, said she and David got separated. She's not sure where either one is ... and she said she heard gunshots, over."
"What the hell?" Sam asked as she hopped off the table. She stalked to Tom and motioned for the walkie-talkie. "What does she mean, gunshots?"
"Say over and let go of the button," Tom said after a moment of silence.
"Oh ... over," Sam said, offering a shrug.
"Sam, she didn't say, but it sounded like she was near tears. Over."
Sam handed the walkie-talkie back to Tom and hurried to her pack. Slinging it over her shoulder, she motioned to Bob to move.
"Okay, we'll backtrack and try to find her. Over."
"Ten-four."
Tom shook his head. "How did they get separated, I wonder? He was looking at his phone or his girl."
"Yeah, maybe he stormed off when she wouldn't give him any," Bob said with a snicker.
Sam shot him a withering look, and Bob's laughter cut short and his face bloomed a deep red. Tom forced a straight face, not wanting to join Bob in incurring her displeasure.
"He's probably right," Sam said with a huff. "I hate to agree, but from all Lizzy's told me, David can act a little childish if he doesn't get his way."
"Well now I'm curious what exactly happened," Tom said as they marched back the way they came.
